When my daughter started dancing at the age of 5, I thought that it was just something fun for her to do. Fast forward 11 years, and I have learned that it is so much more. Along with learning dance moves, flexibility, and all of the other things that come along with learning how to dance, she has learned how to take direction, the importance of hard work, how to win and lose gracefully, and what it means to be committed to a team. She has made lifelong friendships, and has built relationships with amazing mentors. These life skills and relationships are priceless.
I decided to dive into this project a while ago to help local businesses get some exposure. I thought that the owner of this business would be the perfect first spotlight, as her top priority is to pour her entire heart and soul into her business, her students, and their families. She truly loves each and every one of "her babies", just walk into her dance studio and you will see it.
Gotta Dance Company was opened in 2002, shortly after the owner Trish Madden moved to the valley from Ohio. Trish owned a dance studio in Ohio, but moved to Arizona to be closer to her family. She was heart broken when she had to leave all of her kids when she moved, she was sure she would never open another dance studio, but it only took about a year before she realized that there is nothing that she would rather do than teach children to dance, so she purchased an existing dance studio in Glendale, AZ.
When the economy kinda crashed in 2007-2008, extracurricular expenses were the first ones that families cut out. Trish's student enrollment dropped dramatically. In order to keep her doors open, she moved to Peoria to share a studio space with another dance studio. As the economy recovered, so did her student enrollment. She grew to the point where it was time to move into her own place again. In 2015, Gotta Dance Co started building out a brand new 5,000 square foot dance studio. Construction was finally complete and classes began in the new facility in January 2016. This was an exciting time for Trish and the entire Gotta Dance family. Moving to such a big facility was going to provide amazing opportunities not only for the dance studio, but also for the students that attend classes there.
When you stop in the Peoria dance studio on the top of the hour, it is pretty busy, dancers are running in and out of classes, parents are picking up and dropping off their dancers, instructors are chatting with parents about their student's day, but you will always find Trish taking time to chat with a dancer, or a parent just to ask how their day was. If you catch her peeking into a class to check in, you will see every single one of the dancers in that class run up just to give her a hug. None of the dancers leave without saying goodbye, it is truly an environment of love and encouragement.
This environment spills outside of the studio. The Gotta Dance Competition teams spend countless hours together training at the studio, but then spend every chance they get with each other outside of the studio as well. Birthday parties, sleepovers, swim gatherings, movie nights, you name it, these teams are doing it together. It feels like a dance family, not a dance studio. It is an amazing program to be apart of.
Gotta Dance Company provides dance classes for dancers ages 18 months to 18 years old. Classes are available for dancers in all genres and levels. There are also four award winning competitive teams. The Gotta Dance completion team alumni have gone on to dance on collegiate dance teams, professional dance teams, cruise ships, and several have even come back to teach at the studio. I think it says something about the environment when dancers want to return as an instructor. Speaking of instructors, Trish ensures that every single instructor that is hired is highly qualified and that they love to teach and love the art of dance. Everyone on staff seems happy, friendly, and really wants to see their students grow and succeed.
